Joseph J. Looney was hired as an associate at the firm in 1998, began trying cases in 2001 and was made a partner in 2006. In his years with the firm, Mr. Looney has tried cases in both state court and binding arbitration on behalf of physician clients in cases involving professional negligence, with several ‘Cases of Note’ published in various verdict journals. He has also represented institutional and individual clients in various claims including elder abuse, intentional torts, and other healthcare related claims.
Mr. Looney has represented insureds through Beta Healthcare Group, CAP/MPT, Hudson Insurance Company, Norcal Mutual Insurance Company, SCPMG/Kaiser, Professional Underwriters Liability Insurance Company (PULIC), The Regents of the University of California, and The Doctors’ Company.
Mr. Looney has enjoyed his membership in several legal associations, including the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, the Orange and Los Angeles County Bar Associations, and a favorite, the Irish American Bar Association. He is a regular attendant at various medical field association events as well, including the Southern California Association for Healthcare Risk Management (SCAHRM) annual seminar.
Mr. Looney graduated from the University of Iowa in 1983, and then received his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1986. After being admitted to the California State Bar in 1987, Mr. Looney practiced general liability defense litigation for five years with Rigg & Dean, then one of the largest firms in the Orange County general defense firm community. After then practicing general litigation on his own for several years, Mr. Looney was brought on at the firm.
Born in Iowa, Mr. Looney enjoys a yearly return to Iowa City to root for his alma mater’s football team. Mr. Looney and his wife live in Hermosa Beach and in their leisure time are avid volleyball players, having met on the sand. The Looneys are also world travelers, and Mr. Looney is currently engaged in an ongoing battle with the game of golf.
